Gas work in Irish homes is tightly regulated for good reason — badly fitted or poorly maintained gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Here’s what the law means for you as a homeowner or landlord.
Only a Registered Gas Installer can work on your gas
Since 2009 it has been a criminal offence for anyone other than a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) to carry out domestic gas works in Ireland. That covers installing, servicing, repairing or altering gas boilers, fires, cookers and pipework.
Who regulates gas installers?
Under the Energy (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) — formerly the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) — is responsible for regulating gas installers with respect to safety. The CRU has appointed the Register of Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII) as the Gas Safety Supervisory Body. RGII registers, inspects and monitors the competence of gas installers on the CRU’s behalf.
How to check your engineer
- Every RGI carries an ID card showing their name, photo and registration number — ask to see it.
- You can verify any installer on the RGII register at rgii.ie.
- For new or altered gas installations, your RGI should give you a Declaration of Conformance certificate confirming the work meets the Irish standard.
Landlords
Landlords are required to keep gas appliances in rented properties in good repair and proper working order. A regular gas safety inspection by an RGI is the simplest way to show you’re meeting that responsibility and to keep your tenants safe.
